Why Putin is trying to drag out peace talks: Ukrainian Armed Forces explain
In particular, the Russian dictator hopes to negotiate the lifting of sanctions and criminal charges related to his crimes.
Russian president Vladimir Putin
Russian president Vladimir Putin understands that U.S. President Donald Trump wants quick, clear decisions regarding the end of the war in Ukraine and is trying to use this to his advantage.
This was stated by Ivan Tymochko, Head of the Council of Reservists of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, in an interview with "24 Kanal."
Tymochko points out Trump’s repeated statements that he has everything under control, that he influences everything, and that the negotiation process is working at an accelerated pace. According to the military expert, Putin expects the American leader to pressure Ukraine to be more accommodating to Russian demands.
The head of the Council of Reservists notes that the Kremlin leader is indifferent to the daily losses of the Russian army, the destruction in Ukraine, and even the damage within Russia itself.
"What matters to him is to extract as much benefit as possible from these negotiations. He hopes that he will be able to bargain for the lifting of sanctions. And he hopes that he will be able to secure the cancellation of criminal charges for his crimes," Tymochko believes.
He also mentioned that the Russians are currently trying to concentrate all their forces and resources, which, in case of peace talks, Russia plans to use to sow division within Ukraine, "to foster internal conflict and blame."
"It is clear that time is not on his (Putin's - Ed.) side. That’s why he is trying to drag out time along the front lines," the military expert concluded.
