Zelensky answered how much more the war will last
The end of fighting depends on the aid Ukraine receives from partner-countries.
The war of Russia against Ukraine will end sooner if Kyiv receives stronger support from partner-countries, primarily in terms of sanctions and weapons. President Volodymyr Zelensky announced this in his evening address on the 15th of April.
“I am confident that you periodically see in the media – both Ukrainian and Western – announcements about how much longer the war can last. Some say a couple of weeks, others – a couple of years. Some say that the war will last until the end of this year. Some advise to prepare for indefinite confrontation with Russia, while the war continues. Of course, I also receive different predictions. I have much more information than is published in the media about the intentions and capabilities of Russia’s army, the capabilities of Russia’s economy, the emotional state of the public in Russia. All of these must be taken into account before we can say how long the war might last. Therefore, we must account for the efficacy of the tools of exerting pressure upon Russia, which are used by Ukraine and by our anti-war coalition against Russian aggression”, - said the president.
Zelensky announced that “the achievements of our troops on the battlefield are indeed very valuable and historically significant. But they are insufficient to clear our land of invaders yet. We will have to beat them back some more”.
Further sanctions against Russia are necessary, to isolate it from the world and truly strike against the Russian economy.
“Sanctions against Russia are very serious. They are economically painful. But thus far, they are insufficient to leave the Russian war machine without resources to survive. We will have to implement additional, stronger ones”, - stated the head of state and added that “realistically, these two factors are the deciding ones in the question about the duration of the war.”
“I always tell all our partners, with whom I discuss this question, that reaching peace relies directly on the extent of international support for Ukraine. Quite literally, how many more Ukrainians the invaders have the time to kill depends on it. If someone says: a year or years, I answer that making this war much shorter is within their power. The faster we receive the weapons we requested and the more of them we receive, the stronger our positions will be and the sooner we will secure peace. The sooner the democratic world will realise that an oil embargo against Russia and a complete blockade of their banking sector are obligatory for peace to be reached, the sooner the war will end”, - said the president.
He announced that “the most important task is to reach peace as soon as possible”.
