Trump–Putin talks: Are they possible anytime soon? MP breaks it down

MP Yehor Cherniev states that talks between Trump and Putin are unlikely in the near term. While the United States is focused on its energy strategy, Russia is trying to strengthen its position in Ukraine.

According to Cherniev, talks between Trump and Putin on a potential peace settlement for Ukraine are improbable anytime soon, as both sides are currently seeking to improve their leverage before coming to the table.

«Putin is testing new missiles and trying to seize all of Donbas to show Trump that power is on his side. Trump, meanwhile, is temporarily letting the situation play out, focusing on other issues in order to enter negotiations from a stronger position, ” Cherniev explained.

At the same time, he said the U.S. will continue supporting Ukraine — particularly in intelligence sharing and arms supplies under the PURL program.

However, the Trump administration’s key priority for now is energy — specifically, its influence on the global oil market.

«Trump aims to significantly ramp up global production to lower prices and push Russia out of the market without causing pain to the world economy, ” the MP noted.

This includes increasing pressure on Venezuela, Nigeria, Mexico, and Colombia — all major oil producers. According to Cherniev, Washington’s goal is not to start a war but to intimidate these countries and restore U.S. influence in the Western Hemisphere.

«After sanctions against Rosneft and Lukoil, Trump will watch the Russian economy collapse. And when the „client is ready,“ Putin will be offered new, far tougher terms, ” Cherniev concluded.

He emphasizes that the process could take time, since «complex geopolitical issues are never resolved quickly, ” and that Ukraine’s task is to hold firm and prevent Russia from strengthening its position ahead of the next round of negotiations.
