The active phase of the work to restore the shelter of the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant is scheduled to start by 2028, with full completion of the restoration planned by 2030.
This was stated by President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, Odile Renaud-Basso, during a meeting of the International Coordination Group on Energy Security for Ukraine («Energy Ramstein»), as reported by Ukrinform.
According to her, this involves a complex multi-year plan that envisions first stabilizing the situation and subsequently achieving the full restoration of the shelter.
«We have a complex plan: to stabilize the situation and prepare for full restoration, which is to be carried out by 2030. It is to effectively begin at the start of 2028,» she said.
Renaud-Basso stressed that the damage to the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant shelter resulting from a drone attack creates serious long-term challenges.
«This is not a short-term issue of nuclear safety, but a long-term issue,» the head of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development underlined.
She added that the main task is to ensure the stability and functionality of the protective structure, which requires extensive international coordination and financing.
According to her, partners are already demonstrating a readiness to cooperate: financing of 30 million euros has been signed, indicating the existence of a concrete action plan.
