Strikes on substations that transmit power from nuclear power plants could push reactors into emergency mode and create the risk of a nuclear accident, Volodymyr Omelchenko said.

Russian strikes on substations that supply electricity from nuclear power plants could trigger emergency reactor conditions and pose the risk of a nuclear catastrophe.

This was said by Volodymyr Omelchenko, director of energy programmes at the Razumkov Centre, during a broadcast of Vechir.LIVE.

The expert notes that attacks on facilities connected to nuclear power plants have been recorded since November 2022.

«When a substation that carries power away from a nuclear plant is struck, the unit shifts into emergency mode. A reactor cannot be shut down instantly because there is nowhere to send the electricity it generates. As a result, it operates under extreme conditions, which could create the risk of a nuclear accident. Critical equipment, including generators, is also at risk, ” Omelchenko said.

He said information about such strikes had not previously been disclosed, but the danger must now be openly raised at the international level to draw global attention to the potential consequences of attacks on nuclear infrastructure.
