During the active stage of peace talks, the European Union is unlikely to approve new sanctions packages against Russia. Still, keeping additional restrictions ready remains a crucial pressure lever on the Kremlin.
Vladyslav Vlasiuk, Ukraine’s Presidential Commissioner for Sanctions Policy, said this during the “We – Ukraine” broadcast.
“New sanctions are unlikely during active peace talks. Still, keeping them ready is a key lever to steer Putin in the right direction. We continue to support peace through strength, and that strength must be used against Putin,” Vlasiuk stressed.
Despite the expected pause, work on expanding restrictions continues. According to the Commissioner, active development of the EU’s 20th sanctions package is currently underway.
What the new package includes:
- Ukraine’s proposals for energy sector restrictions.
- New sanctions on oil and trading companies.
- Restrictions targeting Russia’s military-industrial complex.
Thus, Ukraine and its partners continue to expand an economic pressure toolkit that can be applied if necessary, upholding the strategy of “peace through strength.”
