"This is what hell looks like": Journalist describes how passengers hid under train for two hours from drone swarm
Journalist Tetiana Zaiets, who was travelling in one of the carriages, described how hundreds of passengers, including children returning from medical treatment, hid under freight wagons in the rain for two hours to escape Russian "Shahed" drones.
Swarm of «Shahed» drones overhead and blankets from conductors: how railway staff protected passengers during the night attack
A night train journey through central Ukraine turned into a nightmare for passengers after a large-scale Russian drone attack.
Journalist and passenger Tetiana Zaiets shared the details on social media.
According to her, the train was urgently stopped in the middle of the night due to the threat from enemy drones. Conductors announced an emergency evacuation, and passengers took cover under the wagons.
"I now know what it is like when a swarm of "Shaheds" is flying. This is what hell looks like. The train was stopped somewhere in central Ukraine at night. I don’t even know the settlement. Half asleep, I only heard the conductor say: "Evacuation". We left the carriage, taking only personal and valuable belongings. It was raining outside. Thanks to the conductors who gave us blankets. We stayed like that for two hours. When the "Shaheds" buzzed, we crawled under the freight train," the journalist said.
The most difficult part of the situation was evacuating children. Carriages at the end of the train carried children returning from treatment. Sleepy and frightened, they had to wait out the attack outdoors in the rain.
"The last part of the train carried children. They were returning from treatment. Sleepy, they were crying. I thought I had ended up in a horror film. But no, this is our life. Thank God the air raid alert was lifted. We are alive. We moved on," Zaiets said.
