Ukraine’s negotiating team is returning from the United States after talks with Donald Trump administration officials. The sides have outlined a preliminary framework for a future deal, covering 20 key points.
This was announced by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in his evening address.
Details of the U.S. negotiations
President Zelenskyy said a report on the trip’s outcomes will be delivered tomorrow by Secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council Rustem Umerov, and Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Andriy Hnatov. The discussions focused primarily on security guarantees for Ukraine.
«Today, our negotiating team is returning after meetings in the United States with envoys of President Trump, and tomorrow morning I expect a full briefing on the documents that have been prepared. A great deal of work has been done — first and foremost on documents concerning security guarantees, as well as the 20 points of the main document — the basic framework discussed by the Ukrainian and American delegations,» the president said.
Pressure on Kremlin and economic levers
Zelenskyy highlighted that the success of peace efforts depends on the ability of the U.S. and its allies to compel Russia to abandon aggression. He stressed that the only effective way to influence Vladimir Putin is to deprive him of the resources needed to wage war.
The president pointed out that the main levers of pressure continue to be: reducing global Russian oil prices, tightening international sanctions, and keeping constant financial strain on Russia’s military apparatus.
«Putin wages war as long as he has the money to buy the loyalty of his inner circle and the Russian population, while at the same time paying for killings on the front line. And over the past year, much has already been done to reduce the amount of money available to the Russian war machine,» Zelenskyy stressed.
He also voiced doubt over the Kremlin’s genuine intentions to halt aggression. He remarked that after years of hybrid and full-scale warfare, «it is hard to believe that Putin is capable of living without killings and invasions.»
