Ukraine will not be able to completely “untie” the knot of problems in its relations with Poland. However, it must learn how to keep them under control so that these disagreements do not become critical for the state.

Former Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said this in an exclusive interview with the 1+1 TV channel as part of the United News telethon.

He pointed to a fundamental difference in how political ratings are built in the two countries. He stressed that there are no political forces in Ukraine that base their campaigns on anti-Polish narratives, whereas in Poland this has become a common practice.

“There is not a single sensible politician in Ukraine who builds their rating on an anti-Polish agenda or anti-Polish slogans. But there are such politicians there. In Poland, many politicians, including the Polish president, build their ratings on anti-Ukrainian slogans. That is the fundamental difference between our countries,” Kuleba said.

The diplomat is convinced that Warsaw will not abandon its chosen political course. According to him, although temporary escalations between the two countries are possible, including blockades of logistical routes, it is important to understand the consequences of such actions for both sides.

Kuleba also stressed that there is one “critical dependency” Ukraine has on Poland: its position within the European Union. He explained that Warsaw uses its voting rights to continuously put forward new conditions regarding financial and defense support for Ukraine.

“They are not against membership; they are Poles. They are not against supporting Ukraine. But they will constantly attach conditions to it: let Ukraine do this, let Ukraine say that,” Dmytro Kuleba concluded.
