After another missile strike by the Putin's army on Dnipro, assumptions appeared on social media that the Russians are attempting to instill panic and subsequent devastation of the city through such attacks. This opinion resonates with how the occupiers are currently shelling Kharkiv in hopes of intimidating the local population to the extent that civilians allegedly begin to press the authorities, forcing them to seek compromises with the aggressor country.
Military-political observer of the "Information Resistance" group, Oleksandr Kovalenko, separately analyzed the strikes on Dnipro and Kharkiv, naming the probable reasons for the attacks in a comment for TSN.ua.
"Attacks on Dnipro are aimed at striking important targets according to the understanding of the Russian command. These could be logistical facilities, military targets, but they also strike civilian objects to remind and terrorize the city itself. Military tasks and terrorizing civilian population for them are two integral components of any operation," Oleksandr Kovalenko says.
The expert adds: "This is combined - military actions and terrorizing the civilian population, it's the overall concept of their strategy of conducting combat operations".
Shelling of Kharkiv: scenarios for the near future
Regarding the likely situation in Kharkiv in the near future, the expert says: "Unfortunately, Kharkiv is located a little over 20 km away from the border with Russia. This is the problem. The shelling can be more frequent, more massive. The distance from the Russian border to Kharkiv allows the occupiers to even use guided aerial bombs. Therefore, the Russians will constantly catalyze this terror, draw attention to it, in order to sow panic among the local population".
According to Kovalenko, as of today, the Russians do not have the capability to conduct large-scale military operations, offensive actions aimed at capturing Kharkiv.
"But they can maximize the terrorization of the city," the analyst says.
In response to the question of why the Russians need an empty city, Alexander Kovalenko answers: "There is a version that they do so in order to prepare conditions for the further capture of the city. However, the local population plays not so much a role during the fighting as the Defense Forces. And the Defense Forces there remain as they were. Therefore, this should be interpreted exclusively as terror and as moral-psychological pressure on the population, so that the population, in turn, pressures the local and central authorities. They say the city is suffering, and action plans need to be found. This is also a kind of information campaign to increase distrust towards the authorities, claiming that Kyiv is covered by air defense systems while Kharkiv is not".
