Will Russia violate a ceasefire? Zelenskyy names the main danger

A frozen conflict must not be allowed, as its consequences are unpredictable.

No one believes that Russia will adhere to ceasefire agreements. However, it is far more dangerous to drag out negotiations for a complete end to the war.

This opinion was expressed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in an interview with Time.

"Since 2014, they [the Russians – Ed.] have constantly violated peace. That’s how I see it. They will keep violating it all the time. That’s why the window of opportunity is very short between the moment we have a ceasefire and the moment we reach an agreement to end the war. It has to be a very short period. One month, two, three, and that’s it. After that, the issue of morale in the army will arise. We have 800,000 armed people," Zelenskyy emphasized.

He explains that the issue isn’t just about defense spending. A frozen conflict poses far greater risks and dangers.

"If we don’t have an agreement to end the war, it becomes a frozen conflict. And we cannot simply continue living in a state of war. We need to open borders. We need to liberalize many things. And we can only do that if we sign an agreement," the President noted.

In his view, if the period between a ceasefire and a final peace agreement is not prolonged, there will only be isolated violations of the truce, and it "won’t be a complete collapse."

"But if the process drags on, everything will fall apart multiple times over. And we don’t know how it will end," Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned.
