Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed a firm stance against the possibility of freezing the war along the contact line. According to him, this would create weak starting conditions for Ukraine in future negotiations with Russia, as it would give the enemy time to regroup and recover.
Zelenskyy made this statement in an interview with Bloomberg.
“This is, to put it mildly, not the best proposal for Ukraine. It’s a weak position entering future negotiations. They lose nothing, they only gain and buy time to restore their forces because, in my opinion, they plan to come back again,” the President emphasized.
Zelenskyy notes that the question of freezing the war would depend on the security guarantees Ukraine receives. At the same time, he stressed that trusting Russia’s promises is pointless due to its consistent breaches of agreements.
“We need to have this understanding before negotiations begin because there are security guarantees that do not depend on Russia. And I’ll be frank with you: no one in Ukraine will trust Russia anyway. So security guarantees from Russia don’t interest me much personally, because what difference does it make what they promise if they don’t keep their word? There have already been guarantees, many times,” Zelenskyy underlined.
He added that guarantees ensuring Russia will not attempt a second attack on Ukraine must come from Donald Trump.
