Residents of Nikopol noticed plumes of black smoke rising above one of the cooling towers of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, which is under Russian occupation. Bright flames from a large fire were also visible nearby.

According to Yevhen Yevtushenko, Head of the Nikopol District Military Administration, this incident does not pose a threat and is a provocation by the Russians.

Citing unnamed sources in the occupied territory, he reported that the occupiers set fire to a large quantity of car tires in the cooling tower.

“This may be a provocation or an attempt to create panic in settlements on the right bank of the former reservoir,” Yevtushenko noted.

The head of the Nikopol District Military Administration assured that the Zaporizhzhia NPP is operating in a regular mode, “as much as possible under the conditions of occupation,” and urged people to remain calm.
