The visit of UN Secretary-General António Guterres to Russia and his meeting with Russian leader Volodymyr Putin contradicts the UN’s stance on supporting the work of the International Criminal Court.

This was posted by Ukraine's Permanent Representative to the UN, Sergiy Kyslytsya, on social network X.

The diplomat cited a portion of the guidelines regarding potential meetings between UN Secretariat representatives and individuals for whom the ICC has issued arrest warrants, as in Putin's case. These guidelines were established by Guterres' predecessor, Ban Ki-moon, in 2013.

The quoted excerpt states that individuals wanted by the ICC may deliberately seek meetings with UN officials to demonstrate their disregard for the ICC and attempt to undermine its authority.

“The Agreement on the Relationship between the UN and the ICC requires that the UN refrain from any actions that could interfere with the Court’s work or its various bodies, including the Prosecutor, or undermine the authority of their decisions,” the excerpt reads.
