How Many Defenders of Mariupol Are Still Kept in Captivity: Azov Has Counted POWs
Around 3 thousand personnel were at Azovstal plant during the siege.
Around 300 Azov fighters are now kept in Russian captivity, as Major Bohdan Krotevych, one of the Azovstal Defenders and the Chief-of-Staff at Azov Regiment (code name “Tavr”) recently released from Russian captivity, told in his interview for Dmytro Hordon.
“Over 700 Azov soldiers are now there (in captivity - ed.). If we speak about defenders of Mariupol in general, it’s about 2 thousand or a little more," Tavr said.
According to him, there were about 3 thousand people at the Azovstal plant itself when the seizure started.
Losses
According to Tavr, the bodies of around thousand fallen soldiers were kept at Azovstal refrigerator.
"We didn't collect some of the bodies because it was a dynamic battle. So if your comrade died there and you moved to the edge of the line - that was it: it was already enemy territory. Some of the bodies were collected by the enemy. As I understand it, they buried them somewhere, most likely, in Mangush. There were mass graves with civilians and so on. We, of course, took some bodies. That is, there were such operations: just to get a body in the gray zone. People, our fighters, put themselves at risk just to get the bodies of their dead brother-in-arms," Krotevych said.
