"I would do it tomorrow": Zelenskyy hinted at the possibility of elections during the war

The Ukrainian President believes that it is necessary to consider how to conduct elections in a state of war. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is open to holding elections during a state of war if the obstacles hindering voting in wartime can be overcome. He also thinks that “we need to think about how to do it.”

The Ukrainian leader said this in an interview with the British television channel “Channel 4 News."

"Here is my answer: if I could do it tomorrow, I would do it tomorrow... We need to change the circumstances and the law," - he said, responding to a question about the likelihood of holding presidential elections scheduled for this spring.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that the postponement of the presidential elections is not due to his whim but is mandated by the law.

"I simply cannot hold them because the law prohibits me from doing so. That is, it prohibits not only me from holding elections but prohibits elections altogether for all institutions," he said.

At the same time, the president added that the problem is not only the legislative prohibition on holding elections during martial law.

“Even if it could be done, what to do with the occupied territories? And how to conduct elections when we have over 6 million people abroad, and unfortunately, there is no format for online elections,” – Zelenskyy said.
