Mariupol has been a flashpoint area of the most intensive combats in Donetsk Region since the very beginning of the full-scale invasion. Currently, the city is 95% destroyed and completely cut off from power supply, water supply, heat supply, communication and food deliveries. There are no reliable data regarding the number of civilians staying in the devastated city.
TSN.ua has gathered all available data about the recent events that happened in Mariupol during April 18th.
• Invaders Barrage Azovstal Plant in Mariupol with Super-Heavy Aircraft Bombs
At least one thousand civilians are still hiding in the underground shelters at the plant territory. Those are mainly women, children and seniors. The Mariupol City Council has posted a drone-recorded video with a bird's eye view of the devastated city showing a pile thick black smoke rising above the facility.
• Vereshchuk Urges Russian Leadership to Open Humanitarian Route from Mariupol
Ukraine urges the military and political leadership of the Russian Federation to open the special humanitarian route from Mariupol to Berdiansk for evacuation of civilians. This statement has been made by Iryna Vereshchuk, the Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine and the Minister of Reintegration of Temporarily Occupied Territories.
• Medvedchuk Asks Zelenskyi and Putin to Exchange Him For Defenders and Civilian Residents of Mariupol
Viktor Medvedchuk, the former People’s Deputy detained by the Security Service of Ukraine, has addressed Volodymyr Zelenskyi, the President of Ukraine, and the Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, who is a godfather to his daughter, with the offer to exchange him for the defenders and residents of Mariupol. The video of Medvedchuk’s offer was recently released by the Security Service of Ukraine.
• Invaders Are Plotting Manipulations to Coerce Mariupol Residents into Cooperation
The Center for Countering Disinformation, a working body of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, has disclosed the details of possible manipulations plotted by Russians to coerce the Mariupol residents into cooperation with invasion forces. In particular, the Russian propagandist mass media are spreading manipulative information about alleged intentions of the Russian government to pay compensations for destroyed residential accommodations in Russian rubles. These fake messages are accompanied with corresponding pictures and visuals.
• The Head of Donetsk Regional Military Administration Disclosed the Number of Civilian Casualties Recorded in the Region During the Last Day
During the last day, the enemy attacks on Donetsk Region resulted in four civilian fatalities, and five more people were injured, according to the data provided by Pavlo Kyrylenko, the Head of Donetsk Regional Military Administration. The exact number of civilian casualties in Mariupol and Volnovakha is yet unknown.
• Two Police Officers in Mariupol Defected to the Enemy’s Side
In Mariupol, two local police officers broke their oath to serve and protect by defecting to the side of the Russian invaders. The defectors were served with criminal charges by the General Prosecutor’s Office.

The Russian invaders have forcibly deported many thousands of Mariupol residents, including up to five thousand children. Volodymyr Zelenskyi, the President of Ukraine, shared these shocking figures during his interview for CNN. The President emphasized that it would be impossible to determine the exact number of civilian casualties in Mariupol under the given circumstances.

• A Young Boy from Mariupol Recorded a Video Message for Russian Troops from His Devastated Apartment to the Sounds of Explosions and Heavy Gunfire
Seven-year-old Makar from Mariupol went to his devastated apartment to record a video message for Russian invaders, who had destroyed his home. The video was released by the Mariupol City Council.
• UK Ministry of Defense about Mariupol: It Aligns with Russia’s Approach to Chechnya and Syria
During the siege of Mariupol, the Russian troops use the military tactics that aligns with their approach to Chechnya and Syria, but are still struggling with achievement of their final goal, the UK Ministry of Defense posted on Twitter.
" The targeting of populated areas within Mariupol aligns with Russia’s approach to Chechnya in 1999 and Syria in 2016. This is despite the 24 February 2022 claims of Russia’s Defence Ministry that Russia would neither strike cities nor threaten the Ukrainian population”, the UK Ministry of Defense’s post reads.
• “The Siege of Mariupol Will Be Lifted” – the Head of Defence Intelligence
Kyrylo Budanov, the Head of Defence Intelligence of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine, compared the statement of the Russian Defence Ministry offering the Ukrainian military personnel at Azovstal plant in Mariupol to surrender to the Ilovaisk tragedy. During these infamous events that happened in 2014, the Russian troops insidiously opened fire at Ukrainian military units that were moving out of encirclement using the previously agreed and confirmed “green route”.
