Invaders Plant Novel “Medallion” Landmines Triggered by Human Step
Use of POM-3 landmines are prohibited by the Ottawa Convention.
Russian troops remotely plant novel POM-3 “Medallion” anti-personnel landmines in the Ukrainian soil, according to Liudmila Denysova, the Commissioner for Human Rights in Ukraine.
“The mine is equipped with an electronic seismic sensor that receives signals about the soil vibrations and triggers the warhead, if the vibrations are similar to those caused by the steps of a person. Then, the mine’s warhead “jumps out” to a height of about 1,5 m above the ground and explodes”, Denysova explained.
Use of POM-3 landmines is prohibited by Ottava Anti-Personnel Landmines Convention as the indiscriminate weapon and are manufactured only in the Russian Federation.
The invaders’ actions also constitute a violation of the Protocol on Prohibitions or Restrictions on the Use of Mines, Booby-Traps and Other Devices to the Geneva Convention of August 12th, 1949 relative to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War.
