"Negotiations Would Be a Serious Mistake”: Former US Ambassador to Ukraine About Sullivan’s Talks with Russia
Recently it was confirmed that Jake Sullivan had indeed communicated with Putin’s adviser regarding foreign policy.
Recently, U.S. Presidential National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan confirmed that the channels of communication between Washington and Moscow remained open. He stressed that it was "in the U.S. interests" to maintain contact with the Kremlin, but that U.S. officials "clearly understood who they are dealing with”.
In his interview for TSN.ua, former US Ambassador to Ukraine and Senior Director of the Atlantic Council Eurasia Center John Herbst told that any potential talks between the US and Russia would be a serious mistake, and one should not forget that Moscow was an aggressor and Ukraine needed even more weapons.
"If Jake Sullivan actually prompted Ukraine to signal its willingness to negotiate, it would be a serious mistake by the United States. Moscow is the aggressor. It wants to hold (already seized - ed.) Ukrainian land. It represses Ukrainians in the seized areas. Ukraine is making good progress in getting its territory back. The best policy for the U.S. is to send Ukraine all the weapons it needs to do so or at least to cut Moscow's land bridge to Crimea. We don't need to convince Ukraine to send signals that it is willing to negotiate. Doing so only encourages Putin to continue his aggression in Ukraine," John Herbst stressed.
