Pressure on Russia must be more effective: Zelenskyy says who is "removing people" from sanctions lists

The problem with sanctions against Russia is primarily not in the number of restrictions but in their quality and the existing opportunities to bypass them.

Hungary and the United States constantly remove certain accomplices of Russian aggression from the sanctions lists, but the pressure on Russia should be strengthened. However, Ukraine believes that U.S. President Donald Trump will continue to impose sanctions on individuals and make them more effective.

This was stated by the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, during a meeting with teachers and students from universities in Finland.

"Sanctions must work, the question is how they work. It seems to me that today we should talk not about quantity, but about quality. Extend the sanctions packages, but do it effectively because there is a way to circumvent sanctions, there is a list of people who are constantly being removed from the sanctions list. Either they are removed in Europe — Hungary does this, or they are removed in the United States of America. But now we strongly believe that President Trump will impose personal sanctions even more strongly," Zelenskyy noted.

The President added that there are exceptions in sanctions against banks that allow them to bypass restrictions, and there are also countries that help banks in this regard. The issue of circumventing sanctions is also relevant for Russia's shadow fleet.

"We are talking about hundreds of ships that bypass sanctions because sanctions are imposed separately for the shadow fleet. Therefore, I would really like and strongly believe that America will demonstrate serious steps regarding sanctions policy in terms of quality, not just quantity," Volodymyr Zelenskyy stressed.
