Russia "blurs" security guarantees for Ukraine: Kovalenko explains the Kremlin's goal

Russia will not abandon its intentions to seize Ukraine — now or in the future.

War

War

Currently, Russia is trying to maintain the conditions for continuing the war and enabling further occupation of Ukraine. It does not want Ukraine to have real security guarantees, so it seeks to "blur" them with its own proposals.

This was stated by Andriy Kovalenko, Head of the NSDC Center for Countering Disinformation.

Additionally, Russia aims to preserve the influence of its church and language as tools for absorbing Ukraine in the future, either politically or militarily. The President of Ukraine is doing everything to ensure that Russia will not have opportunities to restart the war in the future. "That’s why we talk about the importance of real security guarantees, a strong army, and no concessions. And EU membership—frankly, that would be a very strong move on Europe’s part," Kovalenko noted.

A complex game on the board

As Kovalenko explains, it’s important to understand the logic of actions:

- The U.S. is interested in quickly ending the war here and now and is doing a lot to achieve this.

- Russia is interested in prolonging the war or securing a pause with guarantees of future influence over Ukraine and the ability to restart the war at will, attempting to deceive Trump for this purpose.

- Ukraine is focused on preserving the state and ensuring a life without war in the future.

- Europe is not interested in the war repeating or expanding to the Baltics.

"This is a simplified view. But even so, it’s a very complex game," Kovalenko concluded.
