Russia has changed its tactics of attacks on Ukraine's energy sector: an expert named two factors

During the attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure in 2024, Russia employs a different tactic. It significantly differs from the previous one, which led to blackouts in 2022.
Independent nuclear energy expert Olha Kosharna told about this, "Telegraf" reports.
The expert pointed out two noticeable factors regarding the change in tactics by Russia in its attacks on Ukrainian energy system. In particular, now several missiles are directed at one target.
"For example, eight missiles hit the Dnipro Hydroelectric Station. And even if we have a protected transformer substation, when 5-10 “Shahed” drones are flying at one target, defensive structures cannot withstand," Kosharna emphasized.
In addition, she added, the occupiers aimed to destroy the synchronization of the Ukrainian energy system with the European Union. That is why the western region of the country came under Russian attack.
The second component of the new tactic, according to the expert, is that the enemy seeks to "knock out" maneuverable capacities from the energy system.
"The essence is this: more than 50% of Ukrainian electricity is generated at nuclear power plants, but maneuverable capacities are needed for them - stations (thermal power plants, combined heat and power plants, hydroelectric power stations) that can be quickly “switched on” during peak consumption hours to maintain balance in the energy system," Kosharna explained.
