Russia redeploys troops to Zaporizhzhia: Expert reveals enemy tactics

To halt Russia’s advance in Donetsk, Ukraine pulled reserves from other front-line sectors. Now, the enemy is probing precisely those spots where defenses may have thinned.

The situation on the front remains intensely strained. Russian occupiers, failing to break through at one juncture, swiftly hunt for vulnerabilities in Ukraine’s defenses to strike with renewed vigor.

This was outlined by Yevhen Dyky, a veteran of the Russian-Ukrainian war.

According to the expert, Russia’s ambitious push in Donetsk has effectively stalled. Yet this success came at a steep cost to Ukraine’s Defense Forces. The Ukrainian army’s primary challenge today is an acute shortage of personnel.

«We simply lack the manpower. To stop them in Donetsk, we had to redeploy troops from other sectors,» Dyky explained.

This was a difficult but necessary decision — and one that created new risks.

Russian command, armed with robust intelligence, grasps the Ukrainian Armed Forces' dilemmas intimately. Having faltered in the east, they have zeroed in on where Ukraine shifted its reserves—and it appears they’ve pinpointed it.

«Judging by how they’re now overtly probing the Zaporizhzhia axis and unmistakably gearing up for an offensive there, they’ve likely concluded we’ve weakened Zaporizhzhia to bolster the east,» the veteran said.

The enemy now aims to «shift the thrust of its assault» to where it perceives Ukraine’s defenses as most vulnerable.

Yevhen Dyky stresses that Russia holds just one substantial edge over Ukraine—manpower numbers. In all other respects, Ukrainian forces outperform the occupiers.

«They outnumber us by multiples in personnel. And they’re constantly seeking spots to maximize that single advantage,» he elaborated.

Thus, the enemy’s tactic is simple and cynical: after failing in frontal assaults on Donetsk region, Russia now seeks to strike the flank it believes Ukraine has weakened by shifting reserves to defend other critical areas.
