Russia to chair the UN Security Council for a month: analysts explain the danger
Moscow will try to make use of its presidency in the Security Council.
Russia
Aggressor Russia has taken over the monthly rotational presidency of the UN Security Council. Moscow may use this opportunity to exert some influence on the international system.
This is stated in a new report by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
American analysts believe that the Kremlin is likely to use its rotational presidency in the UN Security Council to project power within the international system, "as it has historically done."
The ISW explains that this practice is not new for Russian occupiers, as in April 2023, Russia used the platform to promote its own narratives. At that time, Moscow sought to achieve its desired influence within the international system.
Furthermore, the Institute believes that Russia will use its veto power in the UN Security Council as a basis for projecting power. Several high-ranking Russian officials have recently initiated information operations.
"In this way, the Kremlin plans to absolve itself of responsibility for Russia's well-documented violations of international law in Ukraine," the ISW emphasizes.
