At least 21 national cultural heritage sites have been destroyed in Ukraine by Russian shells and missiles.

The Russian invaders continue to ruthlessly and deliberately destroy the cultural heritage of Ukraine. The Ukrainian government has documented at least 353 attacks on cultural heritage sites, according to Oleksandr Tkachenko, the Minister of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine.

Few days ago, the invaders launched a missile strike on a recently renovated Cultural Center in Lozova, Kharkiv Region, destroyed the school renovated and reopened with the help of the Japanese government, and damaged a skete of Sviatohirsk Lavra (the Holy Mountains Lavra of the Holy Dormition) in Donetsk Region.

According to the Ministry of Culture’s data, the cultural heritage of the Kharkiv Region was the most affected by the war. The Ministry has documented there at least 94 attacks, including 78 attacks in the city of Kharkiv and its suburbs. 

At least 72 similar war crimes have been documented in Donetsk Region, including 52 war crimes in Mariupol.

At least 65 such cases have been reported in Kyiv Region, 37 cases have been reported in Chernihiv Region, 24 cases have been reported in Luhansk Region, 26 cases have been reported in Sumy Region, 8 cases have been reported in in Zaporizhzhia Region, 6 cases have been reported in Zhytomyr Region, 5 cases have been reported in the city of Kyiv and Kherson Region. Moreover, 4 cases have been reported in Mykolaiv Region, 3 cases have been reported in Dnipro Region, 2 cases have been reported in Odesa Region, and 1 case has been reported in Lviv Region.

“The Russian missiles and shells have damaged at least 21 cultural heritage sites of national significance and 88 cultural heritage sites of local significance”, the Minister noted.

Ukraine has already started cooperation with the international partners to develop a plan for restoration of Ukrainian cultural heritage.
