Russian president Vladimir Putin is increasing the intensity of attacks on Ukraine because he realizes that time is not on his side.
Ukrainian diplomat and former Minister of Foreign Affairs Pavlo Klimkin said this in an interview with LIGAnet.
«He will not be able to withstand an arms race with the West in the long term, ” Klimkin emphasizes.
According to him, in just a few years — approximately seven — Europe will have twice as many weapons, and the U.S. will move forward thanks to technological breakthroughs and new defense projects. Meanwhile, the Russian economy, which is already showing signs of decline, cannot withstand the strain of a new arms race.
«The Russian economy simply won’t be able to support that level of investment in new technologies. Putin can show pretty pictures of hypersonic missiles — and unfortunately, they do exist. But that doesn’t change the fact that the West, especially the U.S., is moving to a different level, ” Klimkin says.
In his view, the current situation presents the Kremlin with an existential dilemma: either invest in an arms race or look for negotiation options.
Klimkin also drew attention to the role of U.S. President Donald Trump. In his opinion, the latest actions of the American leader are forcing Putin to choose between making concessions or facing an unfavorable scenario.
«Trump wants to reach a deal. Maybe we won’t like it, but Putin definitely won’t like it — in the sense that he won’t be able to destroy Ukrainian sovereignty, ” Klimkin believes.
In conclusion, he stressed that the increase in the intensity of Russian attacks is a sign that the Kremlin understands: Russia cannot wage war indefinitely. Even if some resources remain, time is not on Moscow’s side.
