In Russia, up to 90% of Ukrainian prisoners of war suffer physical and psychological torture.
This was reported by Prosecutor General Andriy Kostin, citing the results of the first so-called screening - an informal conversation with POWs, Interfax-Ukraine reports.
According to him, Ukrainians in Russian captivity endure various forms of torture due to inhumane treatment, including physical, sexual, and mental violence.
"The system created by Russia is one of torture and inhumane treatment towards those who fall into their hands, whether in the occupied territories or within Russian borders," he emphasized.
Commenting on this information, Brenda Hollis, the head of the International Criminal Court (ICC) team in Ukraine, stressed that the issue is not so much the quantity but the patterns, showing that "a certain category is subjected to torture, and there are specific types of torture".
“We need to know all of this to obtain the necessary evidence and testimonies. We do not consider individual cases; we look at the broader picture representing the crimes,” she explained.
