"They support the enemy": Zelenskyy said that Hungary is in NATO only de jure

Despite being a de jure member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), de facto it works against the bloc.

This opinion was expressed by the President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during his interview with Scandinavian media".

The journalists asked the President what he thought about Budapest not supporting Ukraine's accession to NATO, particularly due to a dispute over the rights of national minorities, and how he planned to solve this problem.

"I think it's a matter of Budapest's desire and nothing else. I believe that Hungary is an independent state and nobody can influence them. It seems to me that there is a political, let's say, confusion among the political elites in Hungary. "It's a very strange situation, don't you think? Can a NATO country be for Russia and against NATO? I think it's confusion," he said.

In addition, Zelenskyy emphasized that this policy is Hungary's independent choice.

"But it seems to me that there is some kind of agreement, legal and gentlemanly. An agreement on respect. There cannot be NATO allies for a country that calls NATO an enemy. This looks like inappropriate behavior. I think so, this is my subjective opinion," Zelenskyy emphasized.

Zelenskyy noted that being allies does not mean simply saying some generally accepted things. Allies must have the same vision on security issues, adhere to a treaty to protect each other, and share values.

“If all allies say that 'Russia calls us an enemy, we must put it in its place, it cannot seize territories”, one country cannot say: 'No, Russia is our ally.' So you are no longer an ally of the Alliance. Therefore if you are a de jure ally, but de facto work against it, you should not advise Ukraine whether to join NATO or not. You should not draw any conclusions or obstacles for Ukraine. Why do you think you are the only one who is right?" – Zelenskyy summarized.
