Ukraine's accession to NATO: on which countries depends the decision - an expert
The next NATO summit will take place in July in Vilnius.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has announced that member countries will discuss the development of a multi-year support program for Ukraine at the Alliance's summit in Vilnius. Although NATO's policy is geared towards expansion, Ukraine's membership in the organization is still in question, as our accession depends on key capitals of participating countries - Berlin, Paris, London, and Washington.
This was discussed by Bohdan Ferens, a political scientist, and founder of the "SD Platform," in an interview with the FREEDOM television channel.
"I think that the keys to the decisions are located there. And if there is a consensus among the key NATO countries, then other countries will support this decision," the expert believes.
Bohdan Ferens also explained the criteria that Ukraine must meet to join the Alliance.
"They correlate with the Copenhagen criteria in the context of the integration of countries into the European Union. The strength and speed of integration of Scandinavian countries, such as Finland, which is already a NATO member, and Sweden, which I think will soon become a NATO member, lie in the fact that they were politically and economically ready. These are developed countries with a serious economy, as well as a military-industrial complex that meets NATO standards," he explained.
The expert also noted that besides the criteria, geopolitical circumstances that affect the moods within NATO member countries and societies are also taken into account.
