Ukrainian Prisoners of War Released from Russian Captivity Have Never Met any Red Cross Representatives – Lubinets
He stressed that is a clear sign of the ICRC failure to perform its mandate.
No Ukrainian defender captured by Russian troops and later released through exchange has ever met the Red Cross representatives, Dmytro Lubinets, the Human Rights Commissioner, reports.
According to him, Ukraine is going to raise concerns regarding the ICRC failure to perform its mandate in terms of meeting the prisoners of war.
"No prisoner of war released from Russian captivity has ever met the representatives of the International Committee of Red Cross. This is a gross violation. I believe that this is a clear sign of the ICRC failure to perform its mandate and we should discuss it in public”, he noted.
Lubinets also spoke about his plans to meet the ICRC leadership in Geneva in early October.
The Commissioner stressed that the Red Cross officers assumed obligations regarding the Mariupol Defenders, and their mandate was to ensure compliance with the Geneva Conventions by Russia.
"They were present when our heroic troops were leaving Azovstal plant in Mariupol, and as part of their mandates they assumed the obligations to check and control their status, to monitor this situation. Now we have found out that nothing like that ever happened at all”, he summarized.
