Whole Ukraine Is a One Big Pocket: Military Expert About Combat Losses
Recently, Volodymyr Zelenskyi disclosed the first official details about Ukrainian combat losses: 60 – 100 soldiers are getting killed in action every day. By the way, the very close figure of 50-100 daily KIAs was mentioned by the Ukrainian President on May 22nd during the meeting with the President of Poland Andrzej Duda. The reason of such an extremely high loss rate is obvious and well-known: Russia has concentrated almost all its available firepower of long-range artillery at the relatively small section of the frontline and has adopted the tactics of devastating air attacks and blanket bombings.
The forces available to Ukraine are reasonably not enough to create the similar firepower concentration due to the need to defend over the total length of the huge frontline, since the country is almost surrounded by the Russian troops. Today, the whole Ukraine is essentially a one big pocket. The Armed Forces of Ukraine have to hold the fort along all directions and axes except for a small part of our Western borders So if you look at the map, it will become obvious that the Russia has been long preparing for this war by creating the military strategic pre-requisites for closing in on Ukraine and forcing its army to defend the large perimeter of several thousand kilometers.
As part of its regular weekly frontline condition review, TSN.ua has talked to Mykhailo Samus, the Deputy Director for International Affairs at the Center for Army, Conversion and Disarmament Studies.
"We have to realize that this is a very exhausting intensive war. Every minute and every second of this conflict, the Ukrainian Armed Forces perform the great exploits of courage by precluding the Russian invaders from advancing in the depth of our territory. Maybe, the President Zelenskyi was talking about the most violent battles, hours or days, because I personally don’t think that our combat loss rate is that much high”, the expert explains.
According to him, the Russian Army still hasn’t achieved any significant success in Ukraine. The Russians really believed that the seizure of Kyiv, Kharkiv, Sievierodonetsk, Kramatorsk and Sloviansk was the matter of several hours for their troops. However, today, June 3rd, is the 100th day of the war, while the invasion army has failed to fulfill its core tasks, since the slow rate of their advancement in Donbass combined with extremely high losses can barely be considered as success.
"Our key task is to eliminate as much Russian invasion forces as we can, including both personnel and military vehicles. That’s exactly the reason why we always talking about the desperate need for more powerful, long-range and precise weapon systems and ordinance, more artillery systems and more aircrafts. The bottom line is that Russia may consider ending this war only after facing the real problems with personnel and military hardware availability. We utilize very well-designed and skillful defensive and offensive tactics focused on saving the lives of Ukrainian military servicemen, while the Russians use completely different approach, They just push both people and vehicles straight into burning furnace. We can say it because we see their combat losses”, Mykhailo Samus explains.
