On Wednesday, April 17, ahead of the European Council meeting, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the participants in the World Bank meeting – finance ministers of partner countries and heads of leading financial institutions.
He announced the content of his appeal to key global financiers in a traditional evening address.
"We are working to ensure that Ukraine has a sufficient financial foundation, which is indispensable in defending against Russian aggression. Defense, reconstruction, social stability – all of this requires finances, long-term support programs. And finally, decisive actions to make frozen Russian assets work to protect against Russian terror," the President explained.
At the European Council meeting, Zelenskyy emphasized what is necessary for Ukraine's defense. "Of course, air defense systems and the front line are key priorities. Now is the time for everyone in Europe, in the free world, to use for strengthening – for increased production and supply of weapons, overall for determination," he noted.
In preparation for the NATO-Ukraine Council meeting, the Ukrainian leader had a phone conversation with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.
"The agenda is all about alliance, about the strength of joint actions, about how we can truly, together, provide more protection for the lives of all our cities and communities. Allies in the Middle East have shown that they really can. They can when there is enough determination," he emphasized.
The President also expressed condolences to the families of the 17 people killed in the Russian attack on civilians in Chernihiv and thanked Ukrainian soldiers who carried out a successful special operation by striking the military infrastructure in the occupied Crimea — the airfield in Dzhankoy.
