Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reacted to Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico's visit to Russian president Volodymyr Putin. According to Zelenskyy, this visit raises serious security concerns for both Slovakia and all of Europe.
Zelenskyy addressed this issue in a post online.
He highlighted that following the Moscow meeting, Fico and Putin made no joint statements or answered any questions from the media.
"They simply cannot publicly disclose what they discussed during the meeting. They fear the public's reaction," the Ukrainian President noted.
Zelenskyy also emphasizes that while Moscow offers significant discounts to Fico, it is Slovakia that pays for them. These discounts come at a cost.
"Such discounts are paid for with sovereignty or shadow schemes. This should interest Slovak law enforcement and intelligence agencies," Zelenskyy stressed.
He further mentioned that details of such funding arrangements had been disclosed during a recent meeting of European leaders in Brussels.
"The leaders noted that Mr. Fico did not wish to participate in Europe's collective efforts to achieve energy independence or to seek alternatives to Russian gas. On the contrary, he seems intent on helping Russia push American gas and other partners' energy resources out of Europe. This means he wants to help Putin earn money to fund the war and weaken Europe," Zelenskyy's statement read.
He emphasized that Ukrainians are losing lives due to Putin's war, "and we believe that such assistance to Putin is immoral."
Zelenskyy also points out that Fico even refused compensation that could have eased the transition and helped reduce dependency. According to the Ukrainian President, the Slovak prime minister is specifically interested in Russian gas, which costs $500 million per year. Additional profits come from the oil pipeline running through Ukraine, generating another $500 million annually, "which benefits Mr. Fico."
The Ukrainian President underlines that Fico's cooperation with Russia raises significant security concerns.
"Thus, his key goal is to do business with Russia, which serves his interests. This is a serious security concern for Slovakia and Europe as a whole. Why is this leader so dependent on Moscow? What are they paying him with, and what is he paying them in return?" Zelenskyy concluded.
