Devastating destruction in Kyiv and Odesa: All about the massive attack on Ukraine and its consequences (photos)

In the early hours of June 17, 2025, the Russian army launched another massive attack on Ukraine using missiles and drones. The enemy struck Kyiv, Odesa, and Zaporizhzhia. The capital suffered the most: two apartment buildings were significantly damaged, and dozens of people were injured.

Attack on Kyiv

Around midnight, during an air raid alert, explosions rocked Kyiv. The capital’s air defense systems were active, engaging Russian missiles and drones. Later, it was reported that a Shahed drone had crashed in the Solomianskyi District. Fires broke out in various districts of Kyiv. Authorities reported that medical teams were dispatched to the Solomianskyi, Dniprovskyi, Obolonskyi, Darnytskyi, and Sviatoshynskyi districts.

Due to the enemy attack, power outages occurred in the private sector of the Holosiivskyi District and the Chervonyi Khutir area of the Darnytskyi District, caused by automatic shutdowns. Energy repair crews are working to restore power.

According to Head of the Kyiv City Military Administration Timur Tkachenko, the enemy deployed 175 drones, over 14 cruise missiles, and at least two ballistic missiles in the capital and its outskirts that night.

«The nature of the damage is direct targeting of residential buildings. Missiles struck from the top floors down to the basements. We are dealing with an utterly despicable enemy, ” Tkachenko wrote online.

The attack’s consequences were recorded at 27 locations across the Solomianskyi, Sviatoshynskyi, Darnytskyi, Dniprovskyi, Podilskyi, and Obolonskyi districts.

Solomianskyi District: Two residential buildings were damaged. A fire broke out in a five-story building. An entire entrance of another residential building was destroyed. In total, 40 apartments were destroyed in this district. According to Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko, the Russians struck a nine-story building with a ballistic missile.

«The strike was so powerful that the missile penetrated all nine floors, ” the minister said.

Rescuers are clearing debris and searching for people. Several individuals were rescued from under the rubble. There are reports of five people missing. Authorities have set up a humanitarian headquarters at Akademika Shalimova St., 9a (School No. 67).

Sviatoshynskyi District: A residential building and an educational institution were damaged. A man with burns was hospitalized.

Darnytskyi District: Debris fell at two locations, with a fire breaking out at one of them. A kindergarten and non-residential buildings were damaged. A humanitarian headquarters was established at the Darnytsia Palace of Culture (Hennadiia Afanasieva St., 18).

Andriy Yermak, Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, shared a video showing a Russian drone crashing directly into an apartment building in the Pozniaky area.

Dniprovskiy District: An industrial area was damaged, and a Shahed drone fragment stuck in the wall of a residential building.

Podilskyi District: Drone debris fell in an open area without further consequences.

Obolonskyi District: A car was damaged, but no fire occurred.

Additionally, dormitories of the Kyiv Aviation Institute were damaged as a result of the attack.

Killed and injured in Kyiv

The massive attack on the capital injured 60 people. There are reports of 14 killed, including a U.S. citizen.

Dnipro district: an industrial area was damaged, a fragment of the «Shaheda» was stuck in the wall of a residential building.

Podilskyi district: drone debris fell in an open area without further consequences.

Obolonskyi district: a car was damaged, but there was no fire.

The attack also damaged the dormitories of the Kyiv Aviation Institute.

Injured and dead in Kyiv

The massive attack on the capital injured 60 people. 14 people are known to have died, including a US citizen.

Attack on Kyiv region

The Russian army attacked Kyiv region with drones and various types of missiles. Air defense forces were active in the region, downing enemy targets.

Vyshhorod District: A 55-year-old woman was injured, and a private house was damaged.

Fastiv District: A private house, two cars, and outbuildings were damaged.

Brovary District: A fire broke out on the roof of a private house, and an outbuilding at an enterprise caught fire.

Obukhiv District: Two private houses and outbuildings were damaged.

Regional authorities promised to provide assistance to all those whose property was damaged.

Attack on Odesa

During the nighttime attack on Odesa, the enemy struck an inclusive center that works with children with developmental disabilities. Fortunately, no one inside the facility was injured. However, a nearby kindergarten building was damaged.

“Significant destruction was recorded in the historic part of the city: buildings are heavily damaged, and fires are still being extinguished at some locations. No reports of casualties have been received so far. All necessary assistance is being provided to those affected,” said Odesa Mayor Hennadii Trukhanov.

Emergency services are currently operating at the scene, and an operational headquarters is being set up in the city.

According to Head of the Odesa Regional Military Administration Oleh Kiper, 17 people were injured in the attack on the city, including a pregnant woman and a 17-year-old girl. There is a possibility that people may still be trapped under the rubble. According to Klymenko, one person was killed in Odesa. Kiper later reported that the body of a 60-year-old woman was found under the rubble.

Attack on Zaporizhzhia

The Russian army launched at least four strikes on Zaporizhzhia. A fire broke out at one of the enterprises. The blast wave shattered windows in over 50 residential buildings.

Overall, several enterprises sustained damage.

Additionally, nearly 30 garages in a garage cooperative were damaged.

Fortunately, there were no casualties. Emergency services are working at the sites.
