These modem-equipped drones, recently deployed by Russia in frontline zones, can be stopped only with electronic warfare (EW) measures.

This was stated in a comment to TSN.ua by military expert Oleh Zhdanov.

He stresses that the key advantage for Russia — and a major problem for Ukraine — is the high strike accuracy of these drones. Stopping them will require a complex, integrated defense.

“You need to detect the frequency, track it, intercept the signal — and only then jam it. That’s tough, because the frontline today is basically a kill zone,” Zhdanov says.

He notes that the mobile group hit in Chernihiv region was likely a random target: Russia is hunting for specific, high‑value objectives.

“It simply ended up in their viewfinder. What Russia really needs is accuracy — spotting targets, dugouts, equipment sites, command posts, EW assets, artillery. Not guessing blindly but guiding the drone with a live camera,” he said.

Zhdanov notes that the new kamikaze model is essentially an FPV drone scaled up in size and range.

“In essence, it’s an FPV drone — only larger and capable of flying farther,” he added.
