Russia changes negotiating team on Ukraine, political analyst explains the implications
Russia has replaced Medinsky with military figures in the negotiation process on Ukraine.
Negotiations on Ukraine war accelerate
Russia is already experiencing significant economic consequences from the war, pushing the Kremlin to move more actively toward negotiations on settling the conflict with Ukraine. This is indicated, among other things, by changes in the composition of the Russian negotiating group — instead of public political figures, military representatives are appearing who directly understand the situation on the front line.
Political analyst Oleksii Buriachenko said this in comments to Focus.
He said the acceleration of negotiations was linked not only to deadlines set by the United States but also to Russia’s internal challenges.
«Economic pressure in Russia is becoming more noticeable and is influencing negotiation dynamics. The seriousness of the situation is reflected in the declining presence of media political figures such as Medinsky, while military representatives who understand the frontline situation and can discuss concrete parameters for ending the war are increasingly involved, ” says the expert.
In his view, this may indicate movement toward preliminary agreements on a possible Russian exit from the war or its freezing. However, unrealistic demands from the Kremlin remain the key obstacle.
«As long as Moscow does not abandon ultimatum-style demands, including calls for Ukrainian territories to be handed over without fighting, a genuine diplomatic breakthrough will not occur, ” he said.
The expert also believes that in spring Vladimir Putin will face a strategic choice: either seek a way out of the war amid a worsening economic crisis without pushing the system toward collapse, or launch a new summer military campaign in an attempt to gain additional «trump cards» on the battlefield.
According to Buriachenko, the absence of strong US pressure could encourage Russia to continue fighting despite timelines outlined by Washington.
«Formally, both Kyiv and Moscow will not reject the White House deadlines, but how sincere this communication is remains unclear. Statements by the US president are increasingly less often seen as an unconditional factor of influence, which undermines the international authority of the United States, ” the expert concluded.
