US-China temporary 'truce' no guarantee of stability: Expert explains leaders' intentions

The meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping in South Korea demonstrated that the current truce between the countries does not mean long-term peace.

Political strategist and managing partner of the National Anti-Crisis Group Taras Zahorodniy said this in an interview with Kyiv 24.

According to Zahorodniy, China has significant economic and technological advantages, is actively developing military programmes and seeks to strengthen its global influence. At the same time, the US is taking measures to strengthen allied relations with Japan, South Korea and the Philippines to contain Chinese expansion.

«The States are trying to reduce dependence on Chinese rare earth metals, concluding new agreements and developing technological and military capabilities. However, China is preparing for military scenarios, and peaceful coexistence is not foreseen for now,» the expert noted.

He also added that China’s economic revival and overproduction of goods are putting additional pressure on Europe and the US, while Beijing continues to strengthen its positions in the Asia-Pacific region.
