First Russian «Shahed» drone shot down in Africa

A Russian «Shahed» drone attack
Rebels in Mali have shot down a Russian «Shahed-136» («Garpiya-A1») strike drone for the first time—the same type of UAV the aggressor state deploys for strikes against Ukraine. Vladyslav Vlasiuk, the Ukrainian Presidential Commissioner for Sanctions Policy, noted that the drone was packed with electronics from Chinese companies and foreign-made components.
He shared these details in a comment to Ukrinform.
According to Vlasiuk, the «Shahed,» downed on May 18 in northern Mali, was being used to support Russian-linked mercenaries operating in the region.
Vlasiuk specified that the aircraft belonged to the new «KK» series modification, which features an airburst warhead detonation capability.
He stressed that the Russian drone contained components—specifically microchips, transistors, diodes, and relays—manufactured by Chinese firms Mornsun, Wayon Electronics, GigaDevice, Shenzhen Codaca Electronic, and NCR Industrial. Parts from STMicroelectronics were also utilized.
«Russia is increasingly exporting its military technology and tools of war to other regions, particularly Africa. It does this largely through dual-use components that continue to flow into Russian production without restrictions, ” Vlasiuk said.
He added that this exact electronics configuration is identical to the one found in the drones Russia deploys against Ukraine.
«The incident in Mali demonstrates just how rapidly dual-use technologies morph into an instrument for exporting war. As long as the supply of these components to the Russian Federation escapes strict controls, Russia’s UAV production will keep scaling right along with the geography of their deployment,» Vlasiuk added.
