Energy collapse: Expert names regions that may face winter without heating

Strikes are hitting Ukraine’s energy sector.

Heating.

Heating

At present, there is a risk that some regions of Ukraine will be left without heating in winter. The reason is ongoing shelling and damage to infrastructure.

Volodymyr Omelchenko, Director of Energy and Infrastructure Programs at the Razumkov Center, said this on the air of «KYIV24».

«This especially concerns frontline regions. Energy facilities there are under constant attack. The situation is also difficult in Kryvyi Rih, because the Russians have heavily shelled this city and the entire region. The Kharkiv region is also quite problematic, as well as Odesa,» the expert said.

He emphasizes that the main source of heat supply in Ukraine is natural gas and, to some extent, coal. According to Omelchenko, 2.6 million tons of coal have currently been stockpiled, and underground storage facilities contain about 11 billion cubic meters of gas. The expert added that due to constant shelling, Ukraine must maintain a certain gas reserve.

«For the guaranteed normal passage of the heating season, there should be about 14.5 billion cubic meters of gas,» Omelchenko says.
