Combat operations in southern Ukraine have inflicted devastating damage on natural areas, particularly the Kinburn Spit.

This was reported by spokesman for the Naval Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Dmytro Pletenchuk on the air of the national telethon.

«The Kinburn Spit has been effectively destroyed. This is the same reserve as „Askania-Nova“. Ecologists are sounding the alarm. They approached me, asked to voice this topic, because unfortunately it is not popular in the information environment,» he noted.

According to Pletenchuk, the situation with ecosystems in the southern regions is much more complicated than publicly known.

«This is only a part of what we’re aware of. Whether and when this reserve can recover is still unclear, ” he said.

He also emphasised that combat operations around Crimea significantly affect flora and fauna. In particular, underwater explosions harm marine animals, including dolphins.

«Sometimes ecologists report thousands of dead animals — they’re extremely sensitive to blasts, ” he explained.

In addition, according to him, ecologists from Odesa region reported the appearance of oil slicks near the coast, but their scale is not as large as in the waters near the temporarily occupied Crimea.
