The Verkhovna Rada adopted a law on multiple citizenship in Ukraine, a decision critically important for maintaining ties between Ukrainians living abroad and their homeland. Numerous myths and falsehoods have emerged around this topic, which have been debunked by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha stated this.

Debunking myths and security guarantees

For many years, the topic of multiple citizenship has been shrouded in myths and fears. Fortunately, during the preparation of the law, all these concerns were taken into account, and robust safeguards were implemented to mitigate risks.

The law explicitly prohibits multiple citizenship with Russia, as a state aggressor, as well as with its allies and countries that do not recognize Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty. The procedures for acquiring and revoking citizenship remain in place and are stringent.

Multiple citizenship continues to be prohibited for public servants and judges. It is permitted only under clearly defined rules, with a specified list of countries and an official acquisition procedure.

«Multiple citizenship is allowed only under clearly established rules: a list of countries and an official acquisition procedure. I won’t list all the provisions here, but I will note that the law is well-thought-out and high-quality, with threats and risks minimized, ” says Andriy Sybiha.
