Threat to Sumy: Border situation and potential for Russian breakthrough

Sumy under attack

Despite rising tensions along the Sumy region border, there is currently no immediate threat of a Russian breakthrough or the encirclement of the regional capital. However, residents should prepare for continued intensive air attacks.

This assessment was provided by Dmytro Zhmailo, co-founder and executive director of the Ukrainian Security and Cooperation Center, during a broadcast on Kyiv24.

He says Sumy remains a vital logistics hub for the Ukrainian defense, which complicates any enemy attempts to advance deeper into the region.

"While the situation is tense, there is currently no threat of encirclement or a rapid breakthrough into the region, as the city remains a powerful logistics hub for our defense," he stated.

The expert noted that due to a lack of significant ground successes, Russian forces will likely continue to prioritize air strikes on the regional center and its infrastructure.

At the same time, the resilience of Ukrainian units at the border prevents the enemy from shifting the frontline in its favor. Currently, the key threat remains regular shelling aimed at exhausting civilian infrastructure.

Meanwhile, reports circulating on social media regarding a supposed risk of "semi-encirclement" of Sumy have been dismissed by the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
