Why Ukraine is stockpiling Flamingo missiles: Expert points to likely reason

Despite expanding production capacity for long-range Flamingo missiles, their limited use in combat may signal preparations for large-scale, coordinated operations.

Ukraine is likely stockpiling Flamingo long-range missiles for future combined strikes against targets inside Russia and on territories it temporarily occupies. This assumption arises from the contrast between growing manufacturing output and the small number of confirmed combat launches to date.

Military analyst Vadym Kushnikov shared this view in an interview with Radio Donbas.Realii.

Flamingo missiles: what is known about the Ukrainian development

The Flamingo is a new Ukrainian long-range missile developed by the company Fire Point. Its declared specifications make it a weapon of strategic significance, with a range of up to 3,000 kilometers and a warhead weighing up to 1,150 kilograms.

Ukraine consistently emphasizes that it uses its long-range weapons exclusively against legitimate military targets inside Russia and in Russian-occupied territories. Kushnikov notes that the missile’s characteristics place it in a «strategic-level» category that should be actively employed in wartime.

Why the missiles are not being used for single-target strikes

Fire Point currently says it produces around 50 Flamingo missiles per month and aims to reach a rate of seven per day by the end of the year. Despite these ambitious plans, confirmed strikes using the Flamingo remain few. According to Kushnikov, this suggests Ukraine is preparing to deploy the missiles in coordinated, large-scale operations.

«This is most likely about stockpiling resources so as not to disperse them on individual targets, but rather to use them in combined strikes alongside other weapons—such as long-range attack drones—to inflict maximum damage on carefully selected targets, ” the expert said.

This strategy enables the optimal exploitation of a scarce commodity, punching through enemy air defenses and hammering pre-designated strategic sites with peak effect. Combined operations typically involve simultaneous launches of diverse munitions to saturate hostile electronic warfare and air defense networks.
