Any security guarantees for Ukraine without the United States are weak guarantees.
This was stated by President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in an interview with hosts Yulia Halushka and Yehor Gordeev on the TSN.ua channel.
"We have a historic opportunity because, I believe, for many years brave people fought for independence and didn’t quite achieve it. We didn’t have independence. Today we can do this… In short, a just peace for us is the understanding that we (will be – ed.) in the EU and when, understanding that we have powerful, strong security guarantees. NATO is the best option for us. We will fight for this. If not? I wouldn't want to give a pass on an alternative right now… Certainly, any security guarantees without the United States, I believe, are weak security guarantees for Ukraine," he emphasized.
Zelenskyy provided the example of Israel.
"If we now take Israel's security guarantees and see how they intercept 200, 300, 500 missiles without NATO, but with the aviation of allies – the United States, France, the UK – with such a strong air fleet, with air defense that works not only from Israel, but across all this land. You saw how air defense worked from the territory of Jordan against Iranian missiles," he noted.
The President adds that there are many details to these security guarantees.
"Such security guarantees (like those of Israel – ed.) have not been offered to Ukraine so far. So, if not... Such a serious "if not" , we haven’t heard yet. That’s why I say, what is a just peace, what is victory. Undoubtedly, in the future, Ukraine will return everything. We must rely on our strong points, do everything to ensure that Ukraine has a just peace and strong security guarantees, preventing Putin (and the Russian army’s return to Ukraine – ed.). And then diplomatically return everything, if there is an agreement that diplomacy will work," the Head of State explained.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy notes that Putin does not want a just peace.
"I don’t think Putin wants this, to be honest," he concluded.
