Czech President Warns of a Potential "Worst-Case Scenario" in the War and Advises to Prepare
Putin hoped Ukraine would lack the strength and determination to fight, Czech leader says.
Czech President Peter Pavel admits that the war in Ukraine may not end this year, so it is important for Europe to provide Kyiv with the necessary support in the long term.
Czech President and former NATO General Peter Pavel said this in his interview with Suspilne.
"We should hope for the best, but it's even better to be prepared for the worst-case scenarios. This does not mean that we should give them a higher priority, but we must recognize that the war may not end this year, turn into a frozen conflict, into some other type of conflict at different levels. We must be prepared for this," the Czech leader said.
In this regard, he emphasized that it was important to provide Ukraine with everything it needed, especially military equipment, as well as financial assistance to continue its defense and turn it into a victory.
"We also have to be ready to support Ukraine in the long-term perspective, and at the same time be able to explain this to our population," Peter Pavel said.
The Czech President explained that Putin expected that Ukraine would lack the strength and determination to fight, and did not think that the West would be so united in responding to the aggression.
"The response of the Ukrainian military, the resistance of the population, and the level of leadership of President Zelenskyy were impressive. You have earned great respect and your struggle has inspired many. It has shown us again the need to sacrifice for something we believe in. It has changed the perception in a number of European countries, including my own," he concluded.
