Draghi Says ‘Big Countries’ in the EU Are Against Granting Ukraine Candidate Country Status

During press-conference on May 31st, Mario Draghi made a statement that Italy was the only major EU member state that did not oppose  granting Ukraine the status of a candidate for accession to the European Union, Ansa reports.

"Candidate country status is objected to by almost all the major EU countries, if not all, except Italy”, he explained after the EU summit. Moving forward with candidate country status at this time is not something that can be expected, because of the opposition of these countries", Mario Draghi said.

Although he added that the final decision on granting candidate country status to Ukraine would be made by the European Commission, which in Draghi’s opinion, indeed wants to see Ukraine as part of the united Europe.
