President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy states that he does not need intermediaries in communicating with the newly elected U.S. President Donald Trump.
He made this statement during the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities on December 17, "Ukrinform" reports.
Zelenskyy revealed that he had several meetings and conversations with Trump.
"The United States is in a transition period. I am in contact with President Trump. We’ve had several meetings and discussions. I don’t need intermediaries for this. There are various politicians who try to gain publicity through such claims," the President remarked.
In this context, Zelenskyy referred to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, saying, "I won’t let him or people like him interfere."
Zelenskyy stressed that Ukraine requires direct relations with the U.S.
"We need direct relations with the United States. We are a strong country, and we’ve proven it on the battlefield throughout Putin's aggression. Does anyone else in Europe have such a modern example? No. Does Orbán have such an army? What will he use to pressure Putin? A joke? A smile? Let him keep it to himself," the President stated.
Zelenskyy also shared that active discussions are currently underway between his team and Trump’s team.
"This is still an initial acquaintance. Trump cannot address many issues legally until the new president of the U.S. is inaugurated. Until then, we are working with the White House and President Biden. They are now increasing the number of decisions and support packages. It’s a pity this increase comes toward the end of Biden’s term," Zelenskyy remarked.
He expressed hope that Trump’s team would continue to support Ukraine and maintain U.S. assistance.
