According to the UN, the Russian war has led to the fact that more than 14 million people, or 40% of the population of Ukraine, are in need of humanitarian assistance.
This was stated by Lisa Doughten, OCHA's Director of Financing and Partnerships Division, at a meeting of the Security Council, Ukrinform reports.
She says that shelling of civilian infrastructure in Ukraine intensified in April and May, and along the northeastern border with Russia, continuous hostilities are taking place in the populated areas.
7,000 civilians were evacuated from the border areas of Kharkiv region, many of them were deprived of access to food, medical care, electricity and gas, Doughten said.
According to her, the UN Human Rights Office has documented over 700 civilian casualties across Ukraine in April: 129 people killed, 574 wounded.
"Since March 22 of this year, the UN and its partners have witnessed five waves of attacks targeting Ukraine's energy infrastructure. In April alone, 50 such incidents were recorded, with Kharkiv and a number of other regions particularly affected. Millions of families across the country have temporarily been left without electricity, water, and gas, necessary for food preparation, heating, hygiene, and other essential services," the UN representative said.
She adds that attacks on railway infrastructure in the east and south of Ukraine have become a new practice of Russian troops.
Also, according to Doughten, strikes on enterprises that "restrict the receipt of humanitarian goods of local production" are causing concern. In addition, attacks on Ukraine's port infrastructure are ongoing.
