Kuleba predicts whether Trump can negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine

A peace process under the leadership of Donald Trump would be complicated by deep "fundamental differences" between Russia and Ukraine, making compromise unattainable.

Former Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba expressed this view in a comment to The Times, as reported by UNIAN.

"In my opinion, quick negotiations are unlikely," Kuleba stated.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is advocating for NATO membership as a path to peace, but Kuleba believes the Alliance might only offer this in 10–20 years, leaving Ukraine vulnerable to Russian aggression in the interim.

Kuleba says that the war will only end with either a Ukrainian victory or a defeat for Putin. He criticized the idea of deploying peacekeepers along the front, suggesting that funds would be better spent on weapons. He noted that a peacekeeping mission would require 40,000 troops - far too few to cover the extensive frontline.

The former foreign minister also suggested that Trump, despite his threats to halt military aid to Ukraine, would likely adjust his stance if Ukraine’s situation on the battlefield deteriorates. Kuleba explains that Trump has a strong instinct for short-term benefits, but if Ukraine faced a severe threat, Trump would not want to be blamed for abandoning the country. In such a scenario, he would likely provide support.

Kuleba also criticized European politicians for fearing their voters, which he believes prevents them from increasing defense spending despite intelligence warnings of potential conflict with Russia. However, he expressed confidence that, if necessary, the UK, Germany, and France would have no choice but to continue supporting Ukraine militarily.

He emphasized that Europe would not abandon Ukraine, as a Ukrainian defeat would inevitably lead to war spreading to their own countries. Supporting Ukraine, he says, is far less costly than waging war on European soil.
