"NATO is outdated": Zaluzhnyi speaks about the security needed for Ukraine
The option of deploying any military contingent to Ukraine also appears just as illusory.
Ukrainian Ambassador to the United Kingdom Valerii Zaluzhnyi
NATO membership will not provide political protection for Ukraine. The state's security could be guaranteed by membership in a European security architecture, but it still needs to be built. This was stated by Ukraine’s Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Valerii Zaluzhnyi, during a meeting with the community of the Ukrainian Catholic University.
"NATO is outdated, both morally and physically. And, most likely, political protection will not give us anything," the ambassador said.
He holds the same opinion regarding potential Western peacekeeping forces that could be deployed to Ukraine.
"Similarly, the idea of bringing in some contingent here, in my personal opinion, seems just as illusory. I want to point out – this doctrine was developed in the mid-90s: when cool guys were getting together there, they filmed videos there, and it was broadcast on CNN. The military guys, by the way, now talk about what that war was like. Just show a NATO soldier that video, and not only will they lose the desire to serve, but something else as well. So, these are frightening things, for which they are unfortunately not ready today," Zaluzhnyi said.
Therefore, in his opinion, "the best security guarantees are rooted in ourselves." In this context, Ukraine's membership in a European security architecture would be useful, but it still needs to be built.
The ambassador is convinced that a new European security architecture can be created based on JEF (The Joint Expeditionary Force) – the United Kingdom’s Joint Expeditionary Forces.
